Wagga Wagga based and family owned business Mick’s Bakehouse has taken home best plain pie at this year’s Great Aussie Meat Pie Competition. They also won best poultry pie in the gourmet division and a total of 12 gold medals and 15 silver medals.
Michael Disalvatore, director and head baker at Mick’s Bakehouse, also took home the Sydney Royal Champion Gourmet Pie and 12 other medals at the Royal Show Fine Foods Competition in 2008. “We never take medals for granted and try our best to make the best possible pie,” said Disalvatore.
“We make everything from scratch and only use the highest quality ingredients. If you use cheap mince, the product will taste cheap. We grind our mince in house to make sure of what we are putting in our pies.” Disalvatore claims the key to making award winning pies lies in a high quality of base and top pastry, as well as an innovative filling.
Their poultry pie of chicken with cranberry and camembert won both this year and last year, while other gold medal pies included Kangaroo Stew, chicken chilli jam stir fry and massaman lamb curry pie.
Parkview Bakery, in Maryborough and La Bakehouse café in Penrith NSW were just a few of the other pie businesses that didn’t go home empty handed.
