The Australasian Furniture Research & Development Institute, or Furntech, is a not-for-profit organisation involved in testing, certifying and researching furniture products.
The organisation provides buyers and sellers with the assurance that furniture products are safe to use, by providing independent product assurance and technical support.

Furthermore, the organisation plays a vital role in the review and development of these national standards, and represents its members at Standards development committees.
As Australia’s primary accredited furniture testing institution only those furniture products that meet these standards will be certified by the organisation.
The process of testing and certifying furniture products is carried out to ensure they are safe for use, long-lasting, made from high quality materials and constructed in an environmentally friendly manner.
The organisation tests both commercial and domestic furniture products, including:
- Height adjustable swivel chairs
- Monitor arms
- Storage furniture
- Cots and bunk beds
- Dining chairs
- Table bases
Furntech is also capable of testing furniture fabrics for quality and strength, from timber and veneer finishes through to leather and upholstery foams.
In ensuring the quality and safety of furniture products from Australia and New Zealand are high, the organisation also aims to faciliate the export of these furniture products overseas. The
The Furntech-AFRDI Bulletin is produced and distributed by the organisation on a quarterly basis, and contains news and information of relevance to the furniture industry.
