Supplier News

In 2008, the 13th year of the Boutique Wine Awards, NSW gained seven of the top honours. The Wine of the Show title was awarded to the Hunter Valley’s Warraroong Estate for their 2005 Semillon. It scored 56 and surpassed some of Australia’s best known boutique players such as Redman Wines, Geoff Hardy, Redgate Wines, Hugh Hamilton, Saddler’s Creek and Centennial Vineyards. K1 by Geoff Hardy 2006 Chardonnay was awarded the Estate Grown and Produced trophy, while Mudgee’s Abercorn Wines' ‘A Reserve’ 2005 Vintage Port clinched the Chris Killeen trophy for Fortified Wine.

Nine Australian judges, led by Huon Hooke, judged over 1000 entries. Hooke, Gary Baldwin and Toni Paterson MW chaired three panels, which included TV personality Matthew Skinner and Phillip Shaw, a former senior winemaker for Rosemount and then Southcorp. The Wine of the Show was sponsored by Dan Murphy’s and the winemaker received an order for 100 dozen of the wine in addition to a perpetual trophy. 17 high quality wines were available for sale at Dan Murphy’s, Alexandria and also available for tasting at the Restaurant 08 Industry Festival, held in Sydney between 11 and 12 August.

In 2009, for the first time ever, New Zealand wines will be eligible for entry into the event. Sponsor Mainfreight International will consolidate the freight and bring it into Sydney free of charge.
