BIS Shrapnel foresee enhanced consumer demand for quality healthy foods

Supplier News

According to the latest Fast Food in Australia report, fast food consumers are continuing to show a greater concern for better quality and healthier food as foodservice increasingly becomes a substitute for meal preparation at home.

The report from the industry analyst and forecaster BIS Shrapnel predict that the trend towards healthier eating will prove to be just as sustained as it has proven to be in Britain where the trend looks unstoppable.

According to the author of the report Sandro Mangosi, consumers are increasingly opting for low-fat, lean and additive free, low-salt and light products. The report has revealed that 50% of consumers interviewed look for diet products.

Consumers were living in a society of time-starved consumers looking for convenience food prepared in foodservices outlets and eaten either on foodservice premises or in the home. Cooking has become more of a hobby than a necessity for many consumers.

Mangosi said that in a further indication of the trend towards healthy eating the survey showed that fizzy drinks were losing appeal while sales of bottled flat water had increased by more that 30%. Yoghurt sales had increased by 44%, vegetable salads by 39% and fruit salads by 25%.
